I was born on 1971 in Damascus, Syria. From 1989 to 1994, I studied Electronic Engineering at the University of Damascus, in Damascus, Syria. From 1999 to 2002 I was with Souccar For Electronic Industries, Damascus, Syria. From 1998 to 2000 I was part time teaching assistance at University of Damascus.

In 2002 I started the PhD in Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino (POLITO), Italy, where I was granted a PhD scholarship, and in 2002 I got a scholarship from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2004 I was visiting researcher at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), in the Signal Processing Institute, where I conducted research in the area of distributed source coding of multi-spherical images.

From 2005 to 2008, I was a Post-Doctoral researcher at the Image Processing Lab of POLITO.

From January to March 2008 I was Invited research professor at the Digital Media Lab, SungKyunKwan University (SKKU), Suwon, S.Korea.

I joined Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Suzhou, China, in 2008.

Currently I am working at Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (unibz), Italy.

My main research interests are: Multimedia Communications, Image and Video Coding, Image and Video Processing and Hyperspecral Image Compression.

In 2006 I participated to the DiVA project, which fosters the creation of a startup company in the field of distributed video streaming (On October 25th 2006, the DiVA team has been awarded the Torino Wireless special prize as the best business plan in the ICT field).

I am interested in history, art and photography.
